Configure the USB Configurable Tilt Switch?

Please refer to the guide on the product page under Documents & Downloads.

Turn the password protection off on my Speed Alert?

Use the password 24687 and then disable password protection in the menu

Set two different angles for left and right alarm on the configurable tilt switch?

You can for example set the forward pitch to 30deg and the backwards pitch to -42deg. The Configurable tilt switch has 2 relay outputs and so 2 sets of different positive and negative angles can be set.

Reduce the effects of vibration on my tilt switch

Imagine for a moment that your tilt switch is a glass tube with a ball-bearing in it. As you roll the tube left and right, the ball-bearing rolls left and right. Shake the tube and the ball-bearing rattles all over the place. Now add some water to the tube. The rate at which the ball rolls slows down and it's response to vibration improves. Now add syrup; the balls rolls really slowly but is much less prone to vibration. This is known as damping the tilt switch. With electronics tilt switches, we have maximum control and can change the damping factor to reach an optimal response where the sensor is quick enough to respond but slow enough not to respond to the effects of vibration. Hummingbird Electronics' USB tilt switch is a good example of a tilt switch with configurable damping levels.

Install drivers for the USB configurable Tilt Switch

Please download the tilt-switch configuration software from the manufacturer or distributor web-site. The download will be in the form of a zip file, which needs to be extracted before installation. Once extracted, double click on setup.exe and the software will install. Please note that the software will not be fully functional until a tilt-switch is connected to the computer via a USB port. When the tilt-switch is first connected to a computer via USB, the Windows operating system will require a driver to be installed. The driver is included in the installation and can be found in a directory called \Drivers. Specify this directory when asked by the Windows operating system. Once installed, run the tilt-switch configuration software and press the connect button to connect with the sensor. The pitch and roll graphs should now start to operate indicating that a connection has been achieved.

Does Hummingbird Electronics make custom devices?

Yes, the majority of our sales are devices produced to customer requirements and in many cases branded with the end customer's corporate identity.

How accurate is the GPS Trip Meter?

Under good signal conditions, with 8 or more satellites visible, our customers report measuring an 8km stretch of measured road to within 4m. At this resolution, it is impossible to tell whether the error is due to the trip-meter, the customer not following the exact track on each measurement or the original measurement being slightly off. We would expect better than 1% under typical measurement conditions.

Where should my GPS antenna be placed?

For optimum performance of your GPS trip-meter or GPS speedometer, the GPS antenna should have a clear view of the sky that is unobstructed by metal objects. In practice, a good compromise between performance and ease of use would be to place the antenna on the dashboard under the windscreen or under the rear sill.

Will my GPS device work in another country?

GPS is a global system. It will work in all countries.

Do I have to pay a subscription to use GPS satellites?

There are no fees payable to use GPS anywhere in the world. The GPS satellite constellation was installed and is maintained by the US government. Other countries have now launched their own constellations of tracking satellites. These are also free to use.

What is a 24V to 24V DC-DC converter for?

In trucks and other large vehicles that run long wires from front to back, there can be significant voltage drops along the way. A 24V brake light may, for instance only receive 19V when turned on. The 24V to 24V converter take an input from 9V to 36V and ensures that the output is maintained at 24V.

How accurate is the position on GPS Trip Meters?

Under good signal conditions, the horizontal position accuracy is 2.5m. The GPS Trip Meters have an indicator telling the operator how many satellites are being tracked so that one is aware of signal quality.

What Datum does the GPS Trip Meter use?

The standard datum used is WGS84 (World Geodetic System - 84). It is by far the most commonly used datum. Other datums are available if required. If you don't understand what the datum is, don't worry, most people don't; it won't affect the quality of your user experience at all.

Does the GPS Trip Meter require a connection to the vehicle?

No. All you need to do is to supply power through the lighter socket. Hummingbird Electronics uses a combination of spacial co-ordinates and Doppler frequencies provided by the GPS satellite constellation to calculate accurate distance.

Does the GPS Trip Meter take hills into account when measuring distance?

Yes, the GPS Trip Meter calculates 3-dimensional distance, taking hills into account to give you an accurate road distance.

Can I pre-load the GPS Trip Meter with a chainage value?

Yes, distances can be pre-loaded by using the buttons on the front of the GPS Trip Meter or via the optional remote control.

Do the speedometers from Hummingbird Electronics require calibration?

The GPS Speedometers do not require calibration. The GPS receivers specify an accuracy of 0.36km/h assuming reasonable satellite reception. If you require further information about accuracy, please contact us.

Why is my inclinometer alarming at level?

Hummingbird Electronics' inclinometers can differentiate between let and right roll and forward and back pitch. Please make sure that limits to the front and right are setup as positive angles and that limits to the left and back are set up as negative angles. For an example, if your pitch settings are 40 degrees up and 60 degrees down, set the limits to +40 and -60.
