CAN to Serial Convertor

The Hummingbird CAN to Serial Convertor is a small, cost effective CAN-bus interface solution for connecting a vehicles CAN-bus to a vehicle tracking unit. This device makes it easy to read the available CAN/J1939 messages, including fault codes, on any vehicle and transmit them at a rate suitable for the application and/or customers budget.

CAN / J1939 messages and fault codes are converted to ASCII and are transmitted over serial to a connected vehicle tracking system at a rate as specified by the user.

Powerful Performance
The rate at which each message is sent can be configured. For example, the J1939 speed message is sent 10 times a second by default. When multiple messages are monitored, this can add up to a lot of data which can be costly to transmit and may not add much value. The CAN to serial converter allows the rate at which each message is passed to the vehicle tracker to be specified. For example, the speed message could be sent once a minute and the fuel level message once every 30 minutes. In this way, a balance between cost and benefit can be established.
Configuration of the message rates can be done by sending serial messages to the module through the attached tracking system.

If preferred, the module can be configured to send only fault codes, allowing for remote diagnosis.

As standard, the module is in listen only mode, ensuring no interference with the CAN bus. If you would like to be able to transmit messages to the CAN / J1939 network, please contact Hummingbird Electronics and we can supply a bi-directional unit.

For customers wanting to interface to a vehicle network without making any physical connection to the CAN-bus wiring, Hummingbird Electronics has a CAN Crocodile that can be clipped onto the wire, allowing the data to be read off the CAN-bus without cutting into the wires.
